Who writes this,
and why
Yilume is one person. Not a team, not a media company, and not an expert in everything on this site — which is why I only write about things I have actually done.
The short version
I live in Dallas, Texas, and have for years. Before Dallas, I lived in Chicago. I travel a lot, and I have planned and driven trips across most of the United States.
Planning is the part I am actually good at — working out what fits, what has to go, and which decision you will not be able to undo later. That is the whole of my claim. I am not a travel agent, not a tour operator, and not a local guide anywhere.
Why cards
Before most of us could read a book or follow a course, we met the world through simple cards: a picture, a word, an animal. One card made one piece of the world recognizable, and the next card opened the piece after that.
Yilume carries that shape into adult subjects without making them childish. One card, one idea, one thing you can do next. The subject keeps its full substance; what changes is that you are never handed forty things at once.
What I make
- Free card collections that explain something confusing. The first is an introduction to AI, written for adults who are not technical and are tired of being talked down to.
- Paid planning tools that take a decision you are about to make and tell you whether it holds up. The Big Island Plan Checker is the first.
Three rules for what goes in
These are the reason this site is small.
Every number is checked, and dated
Driving times, access rules, closing hours — travel facts expire. Everything in my tools carries the date it was verified, and anything I could not verify says so on screen instead of quietly pretending.
I do not write about places I have not been
There is money in publishing an itinerary for somewhere you have only read about. It is also why so much travel content falls apart the moment you try to follow it.
I do not invent proof
No fake reviews, no invented customers, no borrowed photos. If something has not happened yet, this site does not say it has.
The first person I told to cut something was me
I built the Big Island Plan Checker and then used it on my own trip before I booked anything. It cut the Green Sand Beach from my plan and showed me that what I had scheduled for Maunakea collided with sunset — so I went to the Visitor Information Station instead of trying for the summit.
Both were decisions I would rather have made at my desk than at the wheel. That is the entire point of the thing.
What this is not
The cards are a clear way to begin, and a way to make a decision. They do not replace books, courses, professional education, or anyone qualified. Nothing here is medical, legal, or financial advice.
