First Texas road trip · 7–10 days · flying into DFW
Don’t let the drive
ruin your Texas trip
Texas is not a city with countryside around it. It is a set of far-apart places joined by long straight roads, and a week here is decided almost entirely by how you handle that.
The classic first trip goes wrong the same way every time. Four cities get added because each one is only "a few hours" from the last. Hotels get booked one night at a time to fit them all in. Then the week turns out to be mostly interstate, mostly packing and unpacking, and it ends with the thing nobody plans for: needing a holiday to recover from the holiday.
Search and AI will keep giving you more places to add. This deck helps you decide what fits — and what has to be cut.
What you get
Thirty-two action cards that build a realistic DFW–Austin–Hill Country–San Antonio route before you lock in a single hotel. You work through them in order; each one ends with a decision, not a description.
- A 7-day core route, plus an 8–10 day extension. Pick the one your actual dates support instead of stretching a week into ten days of driving.
- A real drive-time calculator. Not the map estimate — the map estimate plus fuel, breaks, a meal, parking and a traffic buffer, which is the number that decides whether a day works.
- A hotel true-cost comparison. Room rate, taxes, parking and the rest, because in Texas cities the parking line is what changes the answer.
- A route decision sheet that records your arrival time, your drivers, and your one must-do, then holds the later cards to those constraints.
- A Big Bend decision, made honestly. Most first-time itineraries include it and should not. The deck checks whether yours can carry it, and rebuilds the route if it cannot.
The constraints follow you through the deck
This is the part a printable itinerary cannot do. If you say on card 01 that you land after 6 p.m., the deck will not later let you plan a full first evening. If you have one driver, the long Big Bend drives are removed rather than left in quietly. If you choose the 7-day core route, the extension days are disabled instead of tempting you.
The result is a plan whose parts agree with each other — which, after a week of adding things from different sources, is rarer than it sounds.
Who it is for
- First time in Texas, flying into DFW, with seven to ten days.
- Anyone who would rather see three places properly than six from the car.
- Anyone who has not yet booked the hotels — that is when this is worth the most.
- Not for a trip built around one city. If you are staying in Austin all week, you do not need this.
- Not a booking service, and not a list of restaurant recommendations.

Questions people ask first
Is this an itinerary I just follow?
Can I use it if I am flying into Austin or Houston instead?
Honestly: not fully. The drive-time and hotel-cost work still applies anywhere in Texas, but the day structure is built around landing at DFW, and I would rather tell you that now than refund you later.
Austin and Houston versions are something I intend to build. There is no date and no waiting list — but if you email hello@yilumeworlds.com and say which airport you fly into, I will write to you when that one exists, and about nothing else.
Does it work on my phone?
Should I include Big Bend?
