Hilo is the island's east-side town: wetter, greener, far closer to Volcanoes National Park, and the practical base for anyone spending real time on that side.
Volcano Village is at the entrance to Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, uphill and often cooler and wetter than the coast. Allow a full day for the park itself.
