Hilo to the Hāmākua Coast: how long is the drive?
What this drive is
Hilo is the island's east-side town: wetter, greener, far closer to Volcanoes National Park, and the practical base for anyone spending real time on that side.
The Hāmākua Coast is the green windward stretch between Waimea and Hilo, taking in Honokaʻa, Waipiʻo, Laupāhoehoe and Pāʻauilo.
What it costs as a day
There and back is 2 hours 30 minutes of driving, before you do anything at either end. The scenic north run out of Hilo, and the usual first half of a waterfall or valley day.
