Kailua-Kona to Hilo: how long is the drive?
What this drive is
Kailua-Kona is the dry west-side town most visitors use as a base, and it stretches south through Keauhou, Hōlualoa, Kealakekua and Captain Cook.
Hilo is the island's east-side town: wetter, greener, far closer to Volcanoes National Park, and the practical base for anyone spending real time on that side.
Across Saddle Road, now the Daniel K. Inouye Highway. Published sources put it at 1.5 to 2 hours.
What it costs as a day
There and back is 3 hours 30 minutes of driving, before you do anything at either end. The classic cross-island transfer, and the one that decides whether you keep one hotel or two.
