Kailua-Kona to the Hāmākua Coast: how long is the drive?

Short answerAbout 1 hour 30 minutes of driving, covering about 60 miles, and that is the map number before you add anything human — fuel, a stop, a meal, or the photographs you will take. This time is verified.

What this drive is

Kailua-Kona is the dry west-side town most visitors use as a base, and it stretches south through Keauhou, Hōlualoa, Kealakekua and Captain Cook.

The Hāmākua Coast is the green windward stretch between Waimea and Hilo, taking in Honokaʻa, Waipiʻo, Laupāhoehoe and Pāʻauilo.

What it costs as a day

There and back is 3 hours of driving, before you do anything at either end. A long way for a day trip from Kona. This drive is the reason Waipiʻo and the north coast are often cut.

Worth comparing: the same place is about 45 minutes each way from Waimea, so doing this day from Kailua-Kona instead of Waimea means about 1 hour 30 minutes more driving, there and back. See that drive.

This time is checked against published Big Island driving-time guides. Treat this as the least the drive will cost you, not the real cost — why map estimates run short here.

The Big Island Plan Checker takes the itinerary you already have, checks it against every drive in that table and the access rules that close things early, and tells you what fits and what to cut first. Five questions, about 3 minutes.
