Hilo to Waimea: how long is the drive?
What this drive is
Hilo is the island's east-side town: wetter, greener, far closer to Volcanoes National Park, and the practical base for anyone spending real time on that side.
Waimea is the cool upland ranch town in the middle of the north of the island. Hotel bookings often call it Kamuela; it is the same place.
Via Route 19. Timed at about 1 hour 5 minutes off-peak. Friday afternoons back up on the Kawaihae Road approach into Waimea, for roughly two miles.
What it costs as a day
There and back is 2 hours 10 minutes of driving, before you do anything at either end. The upland crossing, and the one drive with a known weekly traffic pattern.
Worth comparing: the same place is about 25 minutes each way from the Kohala Coast, so doing this day from Hilo instead of the Kohala Coast means about 1 hour 20 minutes more driving, there and back. See that drive.
This time comes from people who drove the road and timed it, not from a published guide. Useful, but less reliable than a checked number. Treat this as the least the drive will cost you, not the real cost — why map estimates run short here.

Before you book the room, not after
The Big Island Plan Checker takes the itinerary you already have, checks it against every drive in that table and the access rules that close things early, and tells you what fits and what to cut first. Five questions, about 3 minutes.
The first plan it told to cut something was mine.
