Kailua-Kona to Mauna Kea Visitor Station: how long is the drive?
What this drive is
Kailua-Kona is the dry west-side town most visitors use as a base, and it stretches south through Keauhou, Hōlualoa, Kealakekua and Captain Cook.
The Maunakea Visitor Information Station is at 9,200 ft on the access road off the Daniel K. Inouye Highway. It is where self-drive stargazing actually happens, and it is open daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Allow 1.5 to 2 hours from the Kona-side resorts.
What it costs as a day
There and back is 3 hours 30 minutes of driving, before you do anything at either end. A Maunakea evening from the Kona side is a long there-and-back in the dark.
