Short answerAbout 45 minutes of driving, and that is the map number before you add anything human — fuel, a stop, a meal, or the photographs you will take. This time is verified.

What this drive is

Hilo is the island's east-side town: wetter, greener, far closer to Volcanoes National Park, and the practical base for anyone spending real time on that side.

The Maunakea Visitor Information Station is at 9,200 ft on the access road off the Daniel K. Inouye Highway. It is where self-drive stargazing actually happens, and it is open daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Via the Daniel K. Inouye Highway (Route 200), turning onto the access road at the 28-mile marker. The last stretch to the Visitor Station is about 6 miles and is paved.

What it costs as a day

There and back is 1 hour 30 minutes of driving, before you do anything at either end. The short way to the Visitor Station, and the reason a Maunakea evening is far easier from Hilo.

Worth comparing: the same place is about 1 hour 45 minutes each way from Kailua-Kona, so doing this day from Kailua-Kona instead of Hilo means about 2 hours more driving, there and back. See that drive.

This time is checked against published Big Island driving-time guides. Treat this as the least the drive will cost you, not the real cost — why map estimates run short here.

The Big Island Plan Checker takes the itinerary you already have, checks it against every drive in that table and the access rules that close things early, and tells you what fits and what to cut first. Five questions, about 3 minutes.
